OMG, Kerry is certainly one of my fav authors at the moment. Boy this woman can write.
The second instalment of Kerry Barnes’ explosive new series!Do you live by the rules, or die by them?
Holed up in prison, Mike Regan is offered a deal – his freedom in exchange for his firm taking down the gang that is supplying a new dangerous drug that has hit the streets. What starts as a game soon becomes a shocking revelation with devastating consequences. Meanwhile, Mike’s fiancé, Zara Ezra, has her own firm to run. But when the so-called Governor is out to take her down, she has her own decision to make – either fight, run, or write her own rule book…
What did I think?
Well where do you start, there is so, so much I want to say about this book, this series. It's absolutely brilliant, it's one of those books that once you start you get lost, lost in the pages, lost with the characters, nothing else in the world matters at the time of reading because you can't think of anything else other than the book. Epic, Just E P I C! This is a must read. This will be going on my 2019 'Must Read' list I loved the previous book 'The Hunted' and was so looking forward to this, now I've finished 'The Rules' I need 'The Choice' and I need it now. I know there are bigger problems in the world, but my biggest problem in my bookish world is waiting on book 3. July can't come quick enough. This is one of those books, you want to scream and shout about, but have to be so careful as to not give anything away. What I can say is I love the characters, I love the story line, I have gotten to know a little more of each charcter as the book has gone on and feel like i've been on a journey with them. I really can't wait to find out what is in store next. Kerry, keep these coming, keep these amazing characters and story lines you make up in your head, oming, becuase i need more.

Kerry Barnes is back with an explosive new series!
‘A shocking, gripping read’ Dreda Say Mitchell Having spent her life watching her father run his East London firm, Zara Ezra has learnt a thing or two about being a gangster, and she’s ready to take over when the time comes. Mike Regan, a blast from Zara’s past, is the head of his own firm, but when his son is kidnapped in the middle of a gangland feud, Mike has no choice but to accept help from the Ezras to get his little boy back alive. With a rival firm playing increasingly dirty, murder moves to the top of the agenda and Zara has some big choices to make. It seems that the only way to come out on top is to play them at their own game… But will she become The Hunter or The Hunted? A gripping gangland crime thriller, perfect for fans of Martina Cole and Kimberley Chambers.
I first shared this review back in 2018 when the kindle copy was published. I'm now celebrating the paperback release by sharing with you my review again. I have since this, read another of Kerry's latests offerings and belive me when I say this lady is going places. Her writing style is first class and each and every book is just better and better.
If you haven't read a book by Kerry Barnes then you really don't know what you are missing. Curled up over the bonfire weekend, fire roaring and a hot drink in hand, I didn't know what was more explosive, the books or the fireworks outside. It felt like the perfect time to be reading this explosive book. I don't know where to start, this book has it all Deceit, corruption, murder, feuds, rivalry, violence. It's a first class page turner. If you're a lover of a good gangland thriller, then you really are in for a treat. The first book in a new series, I believe The Rules should be available in Feb 2019 followed by The Choice in May 2019. Both available to pre order now. This book gallops along at an amazing pace. Dragging you right into the story. At times I could feel I was there, I was so engrossed in it. There are, as you would expect some fantastic characters, and I believe like me there will some characters you love, and some you'll hate. Kerry has certainly worked her magic and has managed to bring these characters to life. I particularly liked Mike Regan, his bad boy, villain character, with a hidden softer side was a fave. Mike's world comes crashing down when his Son Ricky is Kidnapped. Having believed he was protecting his son, he sent his wife away with him thinking they would be safe. Mike enlists the help of Zara, a woman he has a past with, to help find his son. Zara Ezra is the new Woman about town. Having taken over her fathers firm, she has a lot to prove. It's certainly not going to be easy for Zara proving she can cut the mustard in what is believed to be a 'mans world. But Zara certainly isn't a weak and feeble woman, she's a woman with an agenda. A woman with a mind of her own, and power to back it. Or is she? I can see this becoming one EPIC series of books. They say time flies by, but it doesn't, it drags like hell when you are waiting for the next book... I'm not sat here drumming my fingers and singing 'why are we waiting'... honest I'm not. lol Kerry Barnes is certainly making a name for herself in this genre, she's way up there with the best. I'm relatively new to Kerry's books but I can safely say I haven't been disappointed with one yet. They really do get belter and better with each book. When I first read - Cruel Secrets, I really didn't believe not only Kerry, but anyone could top that book. Having read this one, I know I was wrong. Kerry has smashed it, Big time. First class story telling. If you are new to Kerry's books then OMG how awesome as you will get to read them back to back, WOW how exciting is that. It's difficult to believe I only read my first Kerry Barnes book at the beginning of this year. This is now the 4th one I have read. I have to say from first reading 'Cruel Secrets' I was blown away with the talent this author has for writing.
I am truly thankful that a twitter friend messaged me and told me I needed to read 'Cruel Secrets' that I would really enjoy it, because if he hadn't told me, then I would not have gone on to read some of the other books and I wouldn't have read this one yet. Deceit, compared to Kerry's other books, for me felt like a little bit of a slow starter, building up gradually getting you familiar with characters and surroundings. Engaging you slowly into a story that explodes and becomes gripping. I bought the Audible copy of the book so I could read when I felt like reading, and then continue to listen when I had things I needed to do. I flew through my whole house cleaning away while listening, and didn't feel as though I'd been cleaning. I loved listening it. I have to say though the accents done in the audio book at times really felt like I was listening to characters from EastEnders. Brilliantly done. The tale of how life can change in a heartbeat. Not only for you, but for those around you. Who can be trusted, who should you believe. I have to say the twists in this book were first class, just brilliant. I really wasn't expecting what I read. Kerry has a great knack for engaging the reading, dragging you into the pages, becoming part of the story yourself. There was some great turns in this story, that I just didn't see coming. Brilliantly put together tale of 'deceit'
1964 - London
Dolly Vincent is born to an East End gangster but is sent away for her own protection. Mad Mick is hell bent on his revenge and will stop at nothing to kill her. Estranged from her family, she becomes a successful barrister, but after defending a young Italian man she finds herself caught up in a secret held by a high court judge. Tortured and left for dead she flees London and heads to New York. Only the Vincents know where she is, but even they don't know the truth. 1990 Francesca is back to face her demons but this time she is not alone. One woman three names My thoughts. - Where do I start?
I'd seen a few reviews on this book, and quite a lot of hype about on social media and kept thinking, I really need to read these books.
I received a credit for audible and decided to get this book on audio. What a brilliant read/listen it turned out to be. the narration is first class, the voice change, the accents all just perfectly done. This mad it a really easy book to listen to and get lost in. I got through my housework without feeling that dreaded feeling about what is facing you. This book took my mind off everything I was doing, and my kindle went everywhere with me so I could listen, I flew through the ironing, I went on walks and all the while enjoyed having someone reading to me down my ear. So what did I actually think of the book. Well it's first class, I just loved it. A brilliant story, fantastic characters and the start of a series I know I will certainly get through in no time. This is the second book I've read by Kerry Barnes the first one I read was 'Cruel Secrets' and I was seriously impressed with the writing. This book is just as impressive, and it doesn't take long before you are lost in the pages, loving and hating characters, Kerry Barnes has done a cracking job of engaging you with these characters. We follow the life mainly of Francesca, from her growing up as a child, a twin, to her becoming the woman that she does, a very ruthless woman. Francesca is a brilliant character and one I know I'm going to enjoy reading about in future books. Believable and likeable I found myself rooting for her in all she did. I can see a difference in the writing in this book from the later book I have read, so I know the writing just get's better and I'm looking forward to seeing that in the next books in this series. If East end gangland books are your thing then you'll bloody love this book. Kerry Barnes is certainly going to up there with some of the best writers in this genre, and I look forward to seeing her success. I can't wait for more books. A gripping thriller that will shock you to the core.
Controlled all her life by her religious mother, fifteen-year-old Kelly Raven commits the ultimate sin. She soon discovers that running away to the cold, frightening streets of London is less harsh than her previous life. A drug dealer, two fraudsters, and a prostitute are her new family now and she becomes the woman she was destined to be. Little does she know that Eddie Raven is coming for her, but she is no sweet four-year-old child and he is certainly no doting father. The Raven's blood may run through her veins, but in her case, blood is not thicker than water.
I have to start firstly saying that this book deserves so much more than the 5 stars given. It's easy to say this is one of the best books in this genre that I have read in a long time. This books has so much going on, yet seems so easy to follow. Gripping and unputdownable, don't do it any justice as all.
Wow, wow and wow again. I'm actually speechless, I don't know how I will find the words to do it the justice it so deserves. Super huge thanks to @BookaddictShaun for letting me know I needed to read this one. As usual he was right.
So the story, well where do you start. There is so much packed into this book that I could easily waffle on about it forever. However I'm aware I can't be spoiling for others that may have not read the book yet so, what I will say is, Kelly Raven born into a very mixed up family. Brought up by her controlling mother after her criminal father is sent to prison for 12 years. For reasons I won't go into, Kelly at the age of 15 does a runner to London. This is where she meets a guy and ends up living with him and his family.
Only these are not your average family, this family is made up of a drug dealer, a Prostitute and two fraudsters. ok it's 2018 maybe this is your average family. Kelly soon has to learn to grow up. Kelly also has criminal father who is trying to find her, little does she know that her life is about to change in so many ways. Kelly is one of the best characters created in a book in a long time, she's one of those characters you follow on a journey and many times I ended up talking to the pages, OMG! NO! WHAT! She's just a brilliant character, Vulnerable, shy, caring yet Ruthless, confident and hardfaced all at the blink of an eye. To those who hold her close she's an angel, to those who wish her harm, well then trust me, she's no angel. This book once it's grabbed you will not let you go, trust me. I started it at the wrong time of year for me, Christmas. Having not much time to read with a busy household over the festive period, I was actually glad it was all over and I could settle down and get back to it. |
