On a quiet street, one house is burning to the ground…By the time sign language interpreter Paige Northwood arrives, flames have engulfed her client’s home. Though Lukas is safe, his wife is still inside. But she was dead before the fire started… Lukas signs to Paige that he knows who killed his wife. But then he goes silent – even when the police arrest him on suspicion of murder. Is he guilty, or afraid? Only Paige can help him now… A taut, gripping mystery perfect for fans of The Silent Patient and The Family Upstairs. Praise for The Silent House:‘A unique, chilling, fast-paced read that plunges you into a world of silence that has so much to say’ Deborah Masson ‘A superb innovation for the crime genre . . . a brilliantly terrifying premise and a twisty, gripping tale’ Philippa East ‘Sinister, layered, atmospheric … I couldn’t turn the pages quickly enough’ Debbie Howells ‘A nail-biting page-turner of a thriller … The sense of a community isolated, and all the conflicts and tensions that brings, adds satisfying layers of complexity’ James Oswald i was thrilled at the chance of reading this book. I have read this authors previous work and I can honestly say I was really looking forward to this one.
This is one of those books that really does drag you in. Paige Northwood is a BSL interpreter. (British Sign Laungage) Paige interprets for a lot of different people. After being contacted and finding out that a house was on fire, Paige attends to help Lukas whose house is on fire, Lukas is deaf so needs Paige to sign for him so he can understand what is going on. Lukas' wife is still inside the burning building. It is soon discovered that Lukas' wife Nadia was all ready dead when the fire started and it wasn't the fire that killed her. Paige believes that Lukas is innocent and will go as far as she can to help him. However not everyone is being straight with Paige. Why are people not telling her the full facts, what are things being kept from her. Deceipt, family. love, loyalty this book has it all. Full of twist yet a very easy read to fly through. Once started I was so engrosed in the story I couldn't put it down. Loved everything about this book and more. I look forward to reading more from this author and I have no problems what so ever recommending this book.

Psychopaths can take root in the unlikeliest soil…
DC Maggie Jamieson crosses paths once again with Probation Officer Lucy Sherwood when a domestic violence survivor stumbles into her new refuge, unable to speak, desperate for help. Then another case hits Maggie’s desk. A young man has been murdered, and a curious constellation of black dots has been inked onto his cheek. That’s when DCI Hastings goes missing and Maggie uncovers a shocking connection that turns the case on its head. Every family may hide secrets, but not every family buries them…
Dead Secret by Noelle Holten, I can't believe that this is all ready the 4th book by this author. It doesn't seem long since reading her debut and I'm thrilled at the success this series has achieved. Since that first book I have eagerly awaited each new instalment and I have to say they are just getting better and better. I didn't think it was possible after the first book. I think this author has an advantage as a book blogger, she knows the sort of books people enjoy and she is now in a position to deliver the exact read that people want. Bravo Noelle, you are smashing this.
so Book 4, what did I think. Simple, loved it. The end. This is a fantastic addition to the series, familiar characters, new characters and a story that gets you involved, absorbed into the pages, wanting to read as quick as possible, then not wanting it to end. Its time that Maggie started to think of herself, too much work and not enough fun. But with a missing DCI is that going to be possible. While investigating a murder, it emerges that DCI Hastings is missing! But then it appears that his wife and daughter are also missing. Is Maggie taking on more than she can handle. A domestic case brings Maggie into contact with Lucy Sherwood, who has set up a shelter, a safe house to help people from domestic violence. But Who is this lady that needs help and what has happened to her, it's a struggle to find anything out. With everything going on in her life it's a wonder Maggie knows what day it is, but as always everything she does, she gives her all. I again found this book really engaging, not wanting to close the pages, needing to know what was happening. It really did pull me in, and oh my god, it spits you out at the end and leaves you gasping, needing more but knowing you are going to have for the next book to find out what is going to happen next. Fantastic ending.

But Paton is still pursuing her... ... and he's getting closer.
I was inspired to write this novel after reading a news article about people who undertook DNA tests to find out more about their heritage with shocking results.
Blood Loss is book one in a series featuring DI Paton and his son Tommy, a boy with Down’ Syndrome. After writing Who’s There? I was asked many times to write a sequel with the main character, Arnold. Tommy is a reincarnation of Arnold with a few subtle differences. You can discover the characters in a free novella available on my website. www.kerenaswan.com DI Paton Detective Inspector Dave Paton disconnected the call to his mobile and looked at his son who was pulling on his coat. This wouldn’t go down well. ‘I’m sorry, Tommy, we can’t go bowling today after all. Something has come up at work. I promise we’ll go next Saturday instead.’ Paton couldn’t deny the shiver he’d felt across his skin when the Chief Inspector said a murder victim had been discovered, and he couldn’t quite decide if it had been alarm or excitement. He longed for a case to challenge him and help him get promotion. Something that would prove he was capable of being the senior investigating officer. After all, he was forty-eight now and if he didn’t achieve this soon it would be too late in his career. With the demands his family placed on him he’d never had the opportunity before. Would this be his chance? Tommy paused with one arm in a sleeve. His flat face and slanted eyes, typical of a child with Down’s syndrome, gave nothing away but his voice was aggrieved. He was nearly as tall as his father and he looked him straight in the eye. ‘You promised, Dad.’ Paton grabbed his car keys. ‘I know, son, but this is important. I’ll take you to Auntie Ursula’s instead and Mum will pick you up when she finishes work.’ Tommy might be fifteen but he couldn’t be left alone. To Paton’s relief, Tommy nodded. He was a nice-natured boy and he understood his dad had important work to do. The cold air pinched Paton’s cheeks as they rushed to the car outside. Scotland always seemed much colder compared to Weymouth in the south of England where he grew up. ‘Get in the back please, Tommy. We need to collect Cheryl.’ Ten minutes later Paton pulled up at the kerb and Detective Constable Cheryl Campbell scrambled in. ‘Hi, boss. Any more info?’ She clipped her seat belt on quickly as he accelerated away. He did have more information, but he couldn’t tell her yet. ‘Hello, DC Cheryl.’ She swivelled in her seat to look behind her. ‘Tommy! I didn’t realise you were with us.’ She smiled at the boy then glanced across at Paton with her eyebrows raised. Tommy leaned forward and patted her shoulder. ‘I’m coming to work with you.’ His round face was creased into a wide smile and his thick tongue muffled his speech. ‘Sorry. Not today, Plodders.’ Paton flashed Tommy a quick smile, using the nickname he’d earned as a small boy when he’d insisted on being called PC Plod. ‘I’m dropping you at Auntie Ursula’s like we agreed. We’ll do some investigating another day. Perhaps we can track down the thief who’s been raiding the biscuit jar.’ ‘Oh, Dad, I know it was you.’ Tommy laughed and sat back in his seat. ‘He ate all the Fox’s Crunch Creams again,’ Tommy told Cheryl. ‘Mum will be cross.’ ‘How is your mum?’ Paton glanced sideways at Cheryl. She knew about Wendy’s bouts of depression which confined her to bed for a week or two and sometimes longer. In fact, his whole team knew but he wasn’t keen on discussing it in front of Tommy, or at all for that matter. Paton’s private life was just that. Private. He couldn’t have people feeling sorry for him and thinking he couldn’t do his job properly. They got by… just, although it was difficult at times. ‘Mum’s upset. She found three grey hairs the other day,’ Tommy said with a small shake of his head. Cheryl grinned. ‘I wish I could come to work there again. Where are you and Cheryl going, Dad?’ Paton looked at his son in the rear-view mirror and felt a rush of affection. Tommy had his heart set on being a detective like his father and Grandfather and had recently been given the opportunity of two weeks’ work experience in the police station staff canteen, He was devastated when it finished. He’d even helped solve a problem case for Paton, albeit unwittingly. ‘Will you need your handcuffs? Is someone stealing again?’ Tommy pulled a plastic set of cuffs from his pocket. ‘You can borrow mine if you’ve forgotten yours.’ He dangled them between the front seats. ‘I won’t, but thanks for the offer.’ Paton stopped outside his sister’s house. ‘Come on, out you get. Maybe Mum will buy you fish and chips when she finishes work.’ Paton’s stomach growled at the thought of food and he sighed. ‘Tell her I’ll grab a sandwich somewhere.’

This is the introduction to the main detectives in The Hashtag Killer
and the Detective Jen Flowers series. If you walk into a room with a fresh lick of paint, then the smell is unavoidable; it’s the same at a murder scene: the aroma of death is everywhere. It’s as if the soul of the dead occupies that space, the whole of a life lingering behind and stinking of rotting flesh. The rain made it worse, catching the death bouquet in its liquid grasp and showering the aroma far and wide; and the forensic evidence would be washed away. It was my first irritation of the day. I headed through the uniformed officers protecting the area. Moisture slipped into my eyes as I stared at DI Jack Monroe standing over the corpse. It was a large body, but even from this distance I saw something off about it: the shape was all wrong. Jack gripped onto his stomach in a way I knew his Irritable Bowel Syndrome had kicked in again. I pushed damp strands of hair from my forehead, expecting the cheap black dye to come apart in my hands. ‘You don’t tie it back in weather like this, Jen? You’ll still be beautiful.’ He grimaced as he spoke. The second annoyance of the day: when people call me beautiful. My mother always told me I was pretty, but beautiful was for movie stars, celebrities and models. And my mother was a professional liar. ‘Probably the same reason you eat curries when you know they’ll wreck your guts.’ The nicotine gum stuck to my teeth. I was ready to kill for a cigarette. What was wrong with that body? Jack tried to frown and smile at the same time. ‘It’s our shared stubbornness.
Catch a killer or save a child. What would you do?
DI Jen Flowers thought she’d seen it all after fifteen years on the force, but when a vigilante serial killer hits the city and uses social media to gather supporters, she must fight the public and her doubts to catch a murderer and save her daughter. Suffering from blackouts and abandoned as a child by her father, Ruby Vasquez has been chasing that one scoop to make her an internet star. Living with an alcoholic mother who hates her, Ruby discovers a secret about the vigilante’s first victim, which puts her in the killer and DI Flowers’ sights. Jen and Ruby have to overcome the secrets in their past while battling each other to discover the Hashtag Killer’s identity. Jen will have to choose between keeping her daughter safe or finding a killer, while Ruby will need to decide if becoming famous is more important than doing the right thing. I am really looking forward to reading this book, hopefully you are also looking forward to reading it. Kim Nash writes feelgood, escapism books. It was great being in Muddleford, besides the seaside. Beach huts, ice cream, sea and sand. A superb book that will certainly lighten your day. This book should be given out by the NHS as a antidepressant through lockdown. It certainly lifted my mood.

Anna Smith is a truly awesome writer, I have read and enjoyed each and every one of her book over the years, this is another first class read. Trapped is the 4th book to feature Kerry Casey.
What a joyride I was taken on throughout this book, If you like a gritty gangland, fast paced, thrilling book then this is for you. This book, along with Anna's other books deserve way more than the 5 stars given, this book i would have no problems recommending to anyone who enjoys a gangland style read. When Kerry and her uncle Danny are framed, set up for murder, she is left feeling hopeless in prison, wondering what has happened to her lover Vinny. Its down to the Casey's crew' to not only find out what has happened to Vinny while he's been working undercover in Spain, but to also find out the who and why's from the set up that landed Kerry and Danny in prison. There is so much going on in this book that keeps you turning those pages, you really do end up hooked. I can't say too much without giving anything away, but what I will say if you are a fan of this author you really need to be reading this book, one of the best yet.
A powerful, thought-provoking story. . . a vital read for any crime fan' Kate Rhodes on Life Ruins
When everyone hides the truth, who do you turn to? Becca’s had a hard time of it, but she has finally got her life together. She has a nice little flat, a steady job pulling pints, and she’s even seeing someone new: Andy, who keeps his private life to himself but is always good for a laugh. And then Andy vanishes. When his body turns up on isolated Sunk Island, Becca learns Andy wasn’t just another punter. He was a police officer, deep undercover, investigating a drugs ring that he believed operated out of Becca’s pub. Staggered by the betrayal, Becca turns to the only person she thinks she can trust: her foster mum, Kay. But Kay has problems of her own. She’s just moved into a short-term let in the hopes of finding some peace and quiet. But peace and quiet are hard to come by on Sunk Island . . . Before long, both women are drawn into a terrifying world of drugs, money and death. The gripping new novel from Dagger-Award-winning author Danuta Kot, perfect for fans of Ann Cleeves, Tana French and Denise Mina - a story about the people we are... and the people we aren't.
This was a book I was really looking forward to. A new author for me which is always something to get excited about.
Becca is finally thinking things are looking up for her. She has her own flat, a job and someone new on the scene who she met whilst pulling pints in the pub where she works. Andy is an undercover cop. Becca falls for him as he seems to be a good laugh, something she really needs. Slowly Andy is trying to get information out of her regarding the pub she works in and what may be going on behind the scenes. Something dodgy is lurking but can Becca figure out what. This really does produce tension within the pages and really does get your mind going. I think when there are characters you like and characters that you hate, then the author has done good to get your emotions going. There are characters you root for and want to do good and characters you really don't like. well there was for me. I really got stuck into this story and at times I found it a little unbelievable but very interesting. As the book is told from different points of view I found it something I really had to concentrate on or I would forget who was telling the story. This is an interesting book and I would recommend it for anyone who wants a read that's just slightly different. It is an interesting and gripping read but I can't say at any point it had my heart racing in fear or wonder. It does however get your mind going. |
