From Amazon bestseller Pam Howes comes an emotional World War Two saga about three young women whose bravery and friendship will see them through the darkest times.
Liverpool, 1939. Bella Rogers thought her life was just starting; she can’t wait to get married to her childhood sweetheart, Bobby. But when war is declared and Bobby is called up, his letters stop, leaving Bella heartbroken and alone. Then her family is torn apart by tragedy when her angelic five-year-old sister dies from a terrible illness. They can barely afford a funeral, but the church is packed with the entire community, devastated for their loss. Grieving for her sister and lost love, Bella finds a job at the Bryant and May factory, making matches. As bombs begin to fall, Bella gets the workers singing, keeping spirits high amidst the fear. When she meets a handsome American airman, Earl Franklin Jr, Bella’s heart finally starts to mend. Earl encourages her passion and soon she and her friends are offered the opportunity of a lifetime: to travel the country’s army bases, entertaining the troops and singing for victory. They name themselves The Bryant Sisters. Just as her life is getting back on track, Bella finds herself pregnant – and Earl reveals a shattering secret that changes everything about their future. Desolate, she flees home to Liverpool, but as an unmarried mother, will her family reject her? And, as she faces a terrible sacrifice, will she ever sing with The Bryant Sisters again? A heartbreaking historical novel about women in wartime, friendship, family and hope. Perfect for fans of Nadine Dorries, Diney Costeloe and Wives of War.
I really don't know where to start with this. I absolutely loved this book, loved the flow of the story, loved the characters and loved getting lost into another world while reading it.
Pam as I've said before has an amazing knack for writing these books. I'm not a huge fan of this genre but after reading one of Pam's books I have read every one since. I'm so glad these were recommended and I have no problems recommending them to anyone. A heart breaking story but one that gets you so engaged in it you can not put it down. This is the first book in a new series and it's going to be a series I will be following. The atmosphere around this wartime story is beautiful. I felt as though I was really getting to know these characters and that I want to continue going on a journey with them. Bella was a beautiful character and life was never very smooth for her, but as a woman of her time she just gets on with what needs doing. She's going to be a very strong character the more we learn. An easy to read realistic story that will keep you reading and enjoying right to the very last page, where you will be disappointed that it hasn't carried on, and on.... and will desperately want more.

Following in the wake of hugely successful medical memoirs such as Do No Harm and Fragile Lives, Critical is an intelligent, compelling and profoundly insightful journey into the world of intensive care medicine and the lives of people who have forever been changed by it.
Being critically ill means one or more of your vital organs have failed - this could be your lungs, your heart, your kidneys, your gut or even your brain. Starting with the first recognised case in which a little girl was saved by intensive care in 1952 in Copenhagen, Matt writes brilliantly about the fascinating history, practices and technology in this newest of all the major medical specialties. Matt guides us around the ICU by guiding us around the body and the different organs, and in this way, we learn not only the stories of many of the patients he’s treated over the years but also about the various functions different parts of the body. He draws on his time spent with real patients, on the brink of death, and explains how he and his colleagues fight against the odds to help them live. Happily many of his cases have happy endings, but Matt also writes movingly about those cases which will always remain with him - the cases where the mysteries of the body proved too hard to solve, or diagnoses came too late or made no difference to the outcome.
I purchase this book on a recent shopping trip as it looked really intriguing and interesting.
I had read part of the book, sitting down and enjoying it when I had chance to read. When I realised Netgalley had put it up as one of their new audio books I jumped at the chance to listen to it. I didn't need to wait for chance to sit and read. Out came my ear buds and a paint brush and while painting the fences and doing some gardening I listened to the book. It was a great listen, the narrator had a very calming relaxing voice, the book is done sympathetically towards some hard subjects. One of the reasons this book caught my eye was as it's based around Intensive care I thought it would be good to learn from the dr's side of things. I had a family member in ICU and the stress on the family at the time was immense. Yet the treatment he received was first class from drs and nurses alike. Each chapter gives info on a different subject and it was absolutely fascinating. These are the sort of medics you want on your care if ever it was needed. The knowledge and range that is spoken about is brilliant. I'm by no ways medically trained at all so this was good for me, maybe someone who is medically trained may not appreciate the explanations of some of the subjects. This is by far one of the best medical books I've read. maybe ideal for anyone who is thinking of working in this field or if you are just like me and nosey. WHISPER FEN HOLDS DARK SECRETS
