Do you love emotional and gripping fiction full of twists about people fighting back against what life throws at them? Then try this book by a #1 best-selling author now. You won't want to put it down.
WHO DO YOU TURN TO WHEN LIFE GOES WRONG? WHO IS YOUR GUIDE STAR? Stella won’t give up, but she doesn’t know how to go on. Stella North, a rising star in the police, has her life torn apart by a gunman’s bullets. She has often faced danger, but these injuries mean she must give up the job she loves. Her grandmother Beth is her rock. And Beth is no ordinary woman. At seventy, she runs marathons and has a past that Stella knows very little about. Beth calls in her friend Michael to help with Stella’s recovery. But this man means a lot more to Beth than she reveals. And Stella’s ex-husband Edward and old police partner Robbie want to help, but Stella puts up emotional barriers, and they have problems of their own. Her old friends from her days of Urbex (exploring old abandoned buildings) offer a glimmer of hope for the future. Will Stella find the strength to overcome the challenges of her new life, and will her grandmother at last resolve the deep emotional turmoil of her past? . Wowzers, I enjoyed that one. 5 super starts from me. This is certainly a change from all the other books I have read from Joy Ellis, but a brilliant change too. I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed every page of this book. Stella North was a police officer until she was shot. This book is Stella's journey on trying to rebuild her life, trying to adapt to all that she has lost and trying to find herself again. Memory loss, mood swings are just a couple of the things that Stella has to endure on a daily basis, alongside this she has lost the job that she loved doing. To Stella there is nothing left for her. It takes a long time to come to terms with life changing events. As well as the impact this has had on Stella we also see how it has affecter her grandmother who she is living with while trying to get her life back. I loved these two characters and I could have read a whole lot more about them. A truly enjoyable read, and although I was a little apprehensive about the change, at the end of this book I realised that Joy Ellis is one hell of a writer and even with the change can hold my attention throughout any book she has written. This one is well worth reading in my opinion, and I don't think anyone reading this would be disappointed. I certainly look forward to reading more from Joy and can't wait for the next book in the Fens series. A big fat 5/5 from me.

Twenty years ago a farmer and his wife are cut to pieces by a ruthless serial killer Now a woman is viciously stabbed to death in the upmarket kitchen of her beautiful house on the edge of the marshes. Then a man called Daniel Kinder walks into Saltern police station and confesses to the murder. But DI Rowan Jackman and DS Marie Evans of the Fenland Constabulary soon discover that there is a lot more to Daniel than meets the eye. He has no memory of the first five years of his life and is obsessed with who his real mother is. With no evidence to hold him, Jackman and Evans are forced to let him go, and in a matter of days the lonely Lincolnshire Fens become the stage for more killings and Daniel has disappeared. In a breath-taking finale, the truth about Daniel’s mother comes to light and DI Jackman and DS Evans race against time to stop more lives being destroyed. THE DETECTIVES DS Marie Evans lost her husband in a motorbike accident and has personal connections to the case. DI Jackman leads the team. He is extremely smart and has a knack for bringing out the best in his diverse team, which includes the mysterious computer specialist Orac. Full of twists and turns, this is a crime thriller that will keep you turning the pages until the shocking ending. THIS BOOK IS NOT PART OF THE NIKKI GALENA SERIES BUT TAKES PLACE IN THE SAME STUNNING AREA I have to say I really didn't know what to expect from this book, as this is the first one by Joy Ellis for me to read that isn't part of the Nikki Galena series, A series I have thoroughly enjoyed reading. And would recommend to any crime fan. So this one I really wasn't sure what to expect, but it really is another fantastically written book by this talented author. I find If an author can get you wanting to read their book without you even reading the synopsis then that's pretty good going for them. Joy Ellis has become one of those authors for me, and as soon as I saw this one on Netgalley I just had to request it. I am loving the speed at which JE seems to be getting her books out, and so far have loved everyone of the books. I found this one to be a real page turner. I wanted to keep going and reading because I needed to know what happened. Interesting getting to know new character, but I have to admit I was hoping for Nikki and Joe to pop up somewhere. lol. I didn't feel a huge connection with the characters in this book, but now I know there is another book that follows this, I'm hoping to get to know them a little better. We start off with (no spoilers, this was taken from the book description) Twenty years ago: a farmer and his wife are cut to pieces by a ruthless serial killer. Now: a woman is viciously stabbed to death in the upmarket kitchen of her beautiful house on the edge of the marshes. Then a man called Daniel Kinder walks into Saltern police station and confesses to the murder. So I don't need to go into the story line, just want to say that this book I really did enjoy and I'm looking forward to reading many more books by this very talented author. I did think to start with that this was a standalone book, but it turns out it's not, so we can carry on getting to know these characters now in a 2nd book. JACKMAN & EVANS Book 1: THE MURDERER’S SON Book 2: THEIR LOST DAUGHTERS .

A YOUNG WOMAN’S BODY IS FOUND IN A REMOTE BARN ON THE FENS. BEFORE SHE WAS KILLED, ONE OF HER FINGERS HAD BEEN CUT OFF. WHO IS INFLICTING THIS VIOLENCE AND WHY? Can DI Nikki Galena stop them before anyone else suffers? Full of twists and turns, this is a crime thriller that will keep you turning the pages until the heart-stopping ending. The young woman in the barn had been kept captive for some time. And the case shows strong similarities to an unsolved murder in Derbyshire. When another woman is found alive with similar injuries the case grows even more complicated. At the same time, the Fenland police have received intelligence that the ruthless criminal Freddy Carver plans to make Greenborough the hub for his new enterprise. DI Nikki Galena is desperate to track down Freddie Carver and make sure that he does not put down roots in the Fens, but finding him is not easy. And what’s his connection to the kidnapped girls? And who is the woman being held captive in a remote location? DI Nikki Galena must rally her team of detectives, while facing a traitor on the inside, as Nikki races against time to save more than one victim, including someone she care deeply about. Perfect for fans of Rachel Abbott, Robert Bryndza, Mel Sherratt, Angela Marsons, Colin Dexter, or Ruth Rendell. CAPTIVE ON THE FENS is the sixth novel in a gripping new crime fiction series.
OK, so it is no secret that I absolutely love this series. I can't believe we are at book 6 all ready. Back with DI Nikki Galena and her team, I couldn't wait to start this book when I was approved to read an early copy via Netgalley.
By god it's a good one. I know we tend to say it a lot, but each book is just getting better and better, and I'm really hoping this will be a long running series. I love the characters, especially Nikki and Joseph, I think their working relationship is first class. I keep wanting it to become more than just friends, but then I think it would completely spoil the stories going forward. This time around a woman's body is found in an old barn, the woman has a finger missing. It's not long before another case is linked to this, and the team can start to move forward. The team also learn that Criminal Freddy Carver has been seen back on the fens, and that can only mean trouble. Trouble Nikki does not want or need. And she's determined to track him down and put a stop to whatever it is he is up to. The banter between the team is first class, the feelings they have for one another is first class, they are certainly a team that stick together. I really can't wait for more of this series. I would not hesitate at all to recommend this series to anyone who likes a good crime thriller with lots of twists and turns. Having read the previous books I do feel it gives me a better understanding of the characters back stories, and for me that helps make each book that little bit better. So if you are going to start them, and believe me I think you should, then please do start from book 1. Joy Ellis has written a blinder of story here. I NEED the next book NOW. THE DETECTIVE DI Nikki Galena: A police detective with nothing left to lose, she’s seen a girl die in her arms and her own family destroyed. She’s tough on the criminals who she thinks did this to her. HER PARTNER DS Joseph Easter is the squeaky-clean new member of the team. But his nickname “Holy Joe” belies his former life as a soldier. He has an estranged daughter who blames him for everything that went wrong with their family. THE SETTING The Lincolnshire Fens: great open skies brood over marshes, farmland, and nature reserves. It is not easy terrain for the Fenland Constabulary to police, due to the distances between some of the remote Fen villages, the dangerous and often misty lanes, and the poor telephone coverage. There are still villages where the oldest residents have never set foot outside their own farmland and a visit to the nearest town is a major event. But it has a strange airy beauty to it, and above it all are the biggest skies you’ve ever seen. It's certainly no secret, I am a huge fan of this series. From book one I have enjoyed each and every book. Here we are all ready, at book 5 and the series is growing from strength to strength. I feel the characters have become great established characters and I'm enjoying reading more about them. I enjoy the way they work together, the way the team has been built.
I'm really hoping there is going to be a lot more to this series. And hoping it could become a long running series of books. It kicks off with Nikki and Joseph being in the vicinity of what turns out to be an explosion. Trying to help free someone trapped inside a building, it turns out it is one of Nikki's friends. Fast forward and Helen is still recovering but also trying to move on with her life. Her problem is she is convinced she is being followed. Convinced someone is watching her. Having flashbacks to her accident she believes she was not alone in that collapsed building the day of her accident. She is convinced someone was there in the rubble with her. It has been brilliantly written, and put together this story. You kind of feel sorry for Helen, but are unsure if she is maybe suffering from some sort of Post traumatic stress, and imagining a lot of what she's claiming is happening. At the same time you are as convinced in parts as she is. Brilliantly put together. Nikki and Joseph have a big job ahead of them, trying to help Helen and it also seems that Cox is back in town. A character from pervious book's that has led the police a merry dance. Hurting Nikki in a way no one wants to be hurt. She is still raw and out to get him. I love how the books are set in 'The Fens' It gives the impression of a beautiful place, and a scary spooky place all at the same time. I am so concerned about giving to much away in this book. But I can't stress enough how much it is worth reading. It's a fantastic addition to the series and believe me, once you start this, it is one of those books that you really need to finish. Be warned thought, you want to get to the end, but end up gutted when it's finished. It leaves you wanting more from the series. And my own personal opinion is that, this series would be enjoyed a whole lot more if the books are read in order. The trail of both mysteries will lead to the most shocking discovery of Nikki’s career and put her whole team in mortal danger. Full of twists and turns, this is a crime thriller that will keep you turning the pages until the shocking ending. Firstly super big thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for an ARC of this book.
This is certainly one of my favourite crime/thriller series at the moment. And I look forward to hearing of more books in this series in the future. I will certainly be reading them. Joy Ellis certainly has a writing talent. She has written yet another gripping book, another book that you don't want to put down, it's certainly a page turner. I recently finished book 3, and after it ended I couldn't wait to start this one, book 4. The books in order are NIKKI GALENA SERIES Book 1: CRIME ON THE FENS Book 2: SHADOW OVER THE FENS Book 3: HUNTED ON THE FENS Book 4: KILLER ON THE FENS Personally I would suggest they are read in order, as it gives you a better feel for the background of the characters. So here we are, back with Nikki and back on the Fens. As if Nikki hasn't gone through enough recently (which is why I suggest reading the others first) she has now got to cope with her fathers death. As he died the one last thing he said was EVE, the problem is Nikki doesn't know anyone called Eve, or where she can find her. But this was her fathers wish, and Nikki being the person she is will go all out to find out who she is. This alongside a new case that she is working with her partner Joseph Easter. The discovery of a very injured drug dealer who seems to have fallen down a shaft. Investigating this turns up yet more horrors. Horrors that include strange noises and lights being seen over the marshes. There seems to be a lot more than just historical investigations going on over on the marshes but can the team figure out what is happening before things come to close for comfort. Brilliantly written and woven together, it makes the twists and suspense in this book, leaving you wanting more.
A VICIOUS CRIMINAL IS TARGETING DI NIKKI GALENA AND HER TEAM. ONE BY ONE HE WILL HUNT THEM DOWN AND DESTROY THEIR LIVES, UNLESS SHE CAN STOP HIM FIRST DI Nikki Galena faces her toughest challenge yet. Can she save her team and herself from a cruel and determined adversary who will stop at nothing to harm Nikki and her colleagues? First she must work out who wants revenge against her or one of her detectives. Full of twists and turns, this is a crime novel that will have you turning the pages until the stunning ending. And what is the connection between the series of attacks on the police and the mystery of woman found dead in a seemingly impregnable locked room? Find out in this tense and exciting detective thriller. THE DETECTIVE DI Nikki Galena: A police detective with nothing left to lose, she’s seen a girl die in her arms, and her daughter will never leave the hospital again. She’s got tough on the criminals she believes did this to her. HER PARTNER DS Joseph Easter is the squeaky-clean new member of the team. This is fast becoming one of my favourite series of detective books. I just love the characters in this book.
So I need to say a super big thank you to Netgalley, the author and Publishers for allowing me an ARC of this book. I recently read the first two books in this series, and here we are at book 3, and I have to say the books get better each time. I didn't think it would be possible. The story really drags you in, and I find myself rooting for the characters all the way through. DI Nikki Galena and DS Joseph Easter just make the best partners ever. I love the way they interact, have banter but are a shoulder for each other when it's needed. Another of the characters I really enjoy reading about is Cat. I loved her. I know its said too often about books, but by god this really is one hell of a page turner. As soon as you start it, it's obvious that nothing else is getting done. Read, read and read. Because all the way through you need to know what is going to happen next, then you are hit with another twist, which then stops you from putting the book down. If I could have one complaint about this book then it would have to be that it wasn't long enough, but in fairness I don't think 1000 pages would have been long enough for me. I love it when reading a book that you manage to connect with the characters, and each individual one is different in their own right. So enough of me waffling on, As I said this is the 3rd book in the series, and personally I would say you need to read them in order to be able to get a good feel for the characters, and a back history of their lives. This book sends the team on one hell of a ride, their toughest case yet. Someone is out to harm them all in one way or another, the only problem is we don't know why. We get an idea of who they think it could be from early on, but the thing is have the team got it right, or are they chasing the wrong leads. A first class page turner and a must read for anyone who likes to follow a brilliant series of detective thrillers. I am so ready now for the next one, and I'm lucky enough to have it all ready on my kindle awaiting me starting it.
TWO BRUTAL KILLERS ARE LOOSE ON THE FENS BUT WHO CAN DI NIKKI GALENA TRUST? A gripping crime thriller with a big twist at the end. Detective Nikki Galena’s friend and neighbour meets a tragic end but there’s more to his death than meets the eye . . . And someone terrible from DS Joseph Easter’s past is back . . . A man is found executed on a piece of wasteland in Greenborough town The cold-blooded murder triggers terrible memories for DS Joseph Easter. Just when things seemed to be going well for DS Easter, he realises that the nightmare is coming back, threatening his career, his sanity, and maybe his life. In a breath-taking conclusion even Nikki begins to doubt DS Easter as he faces a race against time to save someone very close to him. My thoughts. 5/5 I received a copy of Shadow over the Fens from the publisher and netgalley.com in exchange for an honest review. And I would like to say a big thank you for that. I started reading this, Book2 in the DI Nikki Galena series as soon as I finished book 1. I really did enjoy book 1, and was hoping and praying that book 2 would be just as good. I got to know the main characters DI Nikki Galena and DS Joseph Easter in book 1, and I really will say It would help greatly if you read the first book, Crime on the Fens first, as it will really help with the character background and give you an idea of what has happened in both their pasts. Although some of their past is highlighted in this book, I still feel you would get a better feel of it. I think it's safe to say in this book Joseph's past seems to have come back to haunt him. In the shape of Billy Sweet, who is someone Joseph hoped he would never see again. In the Fens this time, Nikki's neighbour has committed suicide, but Nikki along with his sister are convinced it was not a suicide even though there were witnesses that saw it. Nikki has to watch that she isn't showing that she is too close to the investigation or she will be taken off it. But she's hell bent on proving that her instincts are right. I have to say I gave book one 5/5 because I really did enjoy it, but I can honestly say this one was even better. There just doesn't seem time to catch your breath through this book, there is just something happening all the way through it. And I'm hoping this series continues in this way and can't wait to here more of this odd duo. They just seem to work so well together. And as I have been writing this review, I have just got book 3, which I am going to start as soon as I finish my current read. I love finding a new series where I can read the books back to back and really enjoy them.
A NEW CRIME THRILLER WITH A COMPELLING DETECTIVE WHO WILL STOP AT NOTHING TO AVENGE HER DAUGHTER THE DETECTIVE DI Nikki Galena: A police detective with nothing left to lose, she’s seen a girl die in her arms, and her daughter will never leave the hospital again. She’s got tough on the criminals she believes did this to her. Too tough. And now she’s been given one final warning: make it work with her new sergeant, DS Joseph Easter, or she’s out. HER PARTNER DS Joseph Easter is the handsome squeaky-clean new member of the team. But his nickname “Holy Joe” belies his former life as a soldier. He has an estranged daughter who blames him for everything that went wrong with their family. THEIR ADVERSARY is a ruthless man who holds DI Galena responsible for his terrible disfigurement. The town is being terrorised by gangs of violent thugs, all wearing identical hideous masks. Then a talented young female student goes missing on the marsh and Nikki and Joseph find themselves joining forces with a master criminal in their efforts to save her. They need to look behind the masks, but when they do, they find something more sinister and deadly than they ever expected . . . This is an exciting and absorbing crime thriller that you won't be able to put down from start to thrilling finish THE SETTING The Lincolnshire Fens: great open skies brood over marshes, farmland, and nature reserves. My Thoughts 5/5 I received a copy of Crime on the Fens from the publisher and netgalley.com in exchange for an honest review. Right from the beginning of this book I enjoyed it. It's one of those books that from the opening chapter you know you are going to enjoy. And I had to read at every opportunity. Joy Ellis is a new author to me, but someone I will certainly be looking out for in the future. If this book is anything to go by then I really can't wait for the next one. Which is good because it's on my kindle waiting for me, and it's going to be my very next read. The Characters are believable and likeable. DI Nikki Galena, not the easiest person to get along with, a detective that no one seems to want to work with, and one that goes out of her way to catch drug dealers. She lives alone and has a secret that none of her fellow work colleagues know about. And if she is not careful, she wont have a job for much longer. She certainly is in a low part of her life. You start off not liking her very much, but I soon grew to really like her. DS Joseph Easter is a character I really liked. he also has history and a story he doesn't want to share, but has actually asked to work with her. That is a first, someone wanting to work with her. it's an unusual set up, but as the story goes on one that works very well. I absolutely loved this book, I found it a first class brilliant read. i'm doing my best not to give to much away, but I want to get across how much I enjoyed this book, and now i'm off to start book two. Happy days. Well worth reading |
