On a remote Highland mountain, the body of Elaine Buxton is burning. All that will be left to identify the respected lawyer are her teeth and a fragment of clothing.
In the concealed back room of a house in Edinburgh, the real Elaine Buxton screams into the darkness… Detective Inspector Luc Callanach has barely set foot in his new office when Elaine’s missing persons case is escalated to a murder investigation. Having left behind a promising career at Interpol, he’s eager to prove himself to his new team. But Edinburgh, he discovers, is a long way from Lyon, and Elaine’s killer has covered his tracks with meticulous care. It’s not long before another successful woman is abducted from her doorstep, and Callanach finds himself in a race against the clock. Or so he believes … The real fate of the women will prove more twisted than he could have ever imagined. Fans of Angela Marson, Mark Billingham and M. J. Aldridge will be gripped by this chilling journey into the mind of a troubled killer.
Well according to good old Amazon, I purchased this book over 12 months ago. So why am I only just reading it? As much as it gets on my nerves when I do this, it's also good because now I get to play catch up with the series.
So what does book 1 have to offer us. Well for what I believe is a debut it has everything you would expect from a established author. This doesn't read like a debut at all. With book 4 due out soon, this writer is certainly getting the books out there for the readers to enjoy. Enjoyment is what I think you will get reading this book, it has a great start with twists and turns that will keep you on your toes, keep you turning the pages and keep you wanting more. This book is also a decent length, I think it's just under 400 pages so it isn't going to finish as you just get started. Getting to know new character for me is always good, and I think here we are introduced just enough to feel you are getting to know them, but not too much that there isn't still time to learn more about them in future books. DI Luc Callanach has just joined Police Scotland, starting his new role as a new case gets going. He's hardly had time to take off his coat. A new case and a new team made this feel like the start of something good. I'm looking forward to getting stuck into the other books now.

Sometimes love is toxic…Bree Dwyer is desperate to escape her husband, take the children and run. But he’s always watching. And she always gets caught. Until her first love, Alfie Jennings, returns to Essex…
Gangsters Alfie and Vaughn have been out of the game for a while, but a life of crime is one you never forget. To get back on top they need serious money, because loyalty and power don’t come for free. One dangerous job and they’ll have the payoff they need. And Alfie isn’t going to let anyone get in the way, least of all a pretty face like Bree. It’s time to show Essex what they’re made of. And this time, Alfie and Vaughn aren’t backing down.
Well I have to say it seems like it's been forever since I read a book by Jacqui Rose. This one has certainly been a long time coming. When I got a message off a fellow book blogger telling me this was available on Netgalley, I headed right on over there to request it. I was thrilled when my request was approved, and started it as soon as I could.
So what did I think about Toxic? Well I'd say it's been worth waiting for. I had a couple of doubts at the beginning as I felt there were quite a lot of characters for me to get to know. I also got a little confused at times, not realising that the book had gone back in time occasionally. Once I got my head around this i flew through the book. The story has all you want from a great read, Death, Deception, Crime, and a whole heap more. Each chapter really does leave you wanting more, it's certainly one of those 'Just one more chapter' kind of books. Bree is in a marriage that to say the least isn't a happy one. Her husband and mother in law are horrible characters, but needed for the way the story was told. They seemed to control everything around and including Bree. Bree just wants to be able to get away from it all, but with her every move watched, that isn't going to happen. That is until a chance meeting with Alfie Jennings. Alfie is someone she knows for her pas, he has returned to Essex after living away for a while. Could Alfie change things for her. I have to say as much as the Mother in law really riled me, and my dislike for her was immense, she really was a well written character. I think if an author can get you feeling so strongly for certain characters that they've done a damn good job. It was great to see some of the older characters from Jacqui's previous books make an appearance in this book. It almost felt like I was meeting some old acquaintances. I don't think this book was as gripping as some of Jacqui's other books, but it's still a pretty damn good read. I have to say it's good to have her back and I really do look forward to more books coming out in the future. Can certainly say that you have been missed Jacqui, and welcome back.

The fourth unputdownable book in the DS Mark Heckenburg series. A killer thriller for fans of Stuart MacBride and Luther, from the #1 ebook bestseller Paul Finch. His worst nightmare is back… As a brutal winter takes hold of the Lake District, a prolific serial killer stalks the fells. ‘The Stranger’ has returned and for DS Mark ‘Heck’ Heckenburg, the signs are all too familiar. Last seen on Dartmoor ten years earlier, The Stranger murdered his victims in vicious, cold-blooded attacks – and when two young women go missing, Heck fears the worst. As The Stranger lays siege to a remote community, Heck watches helplessly as the killer plays his cruel game, picking off his victims one by one. And with no way to get word out of the valley, Heck must play ball… A spine-chilling thriller, from the #1 ebook bestseller. Perfect for fans of Stuart MacBride and James Oswald. Book 4 in the DS Mark Heckenburg series. I hadn't actually realised that I was so far behind with this series. After finishing this book I also realised I hadn't read books 1 & 2. That said, it didn't take away any enjoyment I had of the book. So i would say it can be read as a stand alone. I just don't think books should be read out of order, and i'm annoyed with myself.
The young girl you have found isn’t the first experiment I’ve carried out. She won’t be the last.
A tense, unpredictable crime debut that will not only have you gripped, but will chill you to the bone. Perfect for fans of Stuart MacBride and Mark Billingham. A serial killer is stalking the streets of Liverpool, gruesomely murdering victims as part of a series of infamous, unethical and deadly psychological experiments. When it becomes apparent that each victim has ties to the City of Liverpool University, DI David Murphy and DS Laura Rossi realise they're chasing a killer unlike any they've hunted before – one who doesn’t just want his victims’ bodies, but wants their minds too. With a series of psychological twists Dead Gone will keep you guessing until the very end.
Another series of books another author i'm a little behind on. According to Mr Amazon "You purchased this item on 16 Jan 2014. Better start playing catch up.
We are introduced to DI David Murphy and DS Laura Rossi in this book, plus a whole other mix of fascinating and interesting characters. Characters that it's going to be good to get to know. Trying to keep the streets of Liverpool safe. David Murphy is certainly a mixed up individual, and I can't decide if I've taken to him or not. Its ok though as I have the rest of the series to catch up on maybe they will help me decide. I'm not saying I didn't like him at all, I just couldn't decide what it was about him that was niggling at me. The story is an interesting one, and I enjoyed it. Will be great to see what more this author has to offer. As this was his debut book, i'm blessed to have more to read without the wait for them being published.
You think you know who to trust? You think you know the difference between good and evil? You’re wrong …
The body of the head teacher of an exclusive Devon school is found hanging from the rafters in the assembly hall. Hours earlier he’d received a package, and only he could understand the silent message it conveyed. It meant the end. As Exeter suffers a rising count of gruesome deaths, troubled DS Imogen Grey and DS Adrian Miles must solve the case and make their city safe again. But as they’re drawn into a network of corruption, lies and exploitation, every step brings them closer to grim secrets hidden at the heart of their community. And once they learn what’s motivating this killer, will they truly want to stop him? SMART. GRIPPING. GRUESOME. This is a psychological crime thriller in a class of its own. WARNING: Most definitely *not* for the faint-hearted! .
With a warning of not for the faint-hearted, then it’s almost like a challenge to pick up the book and prove that by no means are you faint-hearted.
I did enjoy this book, but maybe I had read too many of the reviews and was expecting a little more than I got. Don’t get me wrong there was nothing at all wrong with it, it’s a good solid read but I do feel sometimes hype around certain books can build you up a little too much. I was expecting it to be a seriously gruesome read but personally I didn’t find that, it is let’s say quite descriptive in some scenes and maybe you won’t want to be sat reading it over your bowl of cornflakes first thing. The story itself is pretty decent. Grabs hold of you and keeps hold, wanting and needing to know a little bit more. DS Adrian Miller and DS Imogen Grey are the crime fighting duo in this read. An interesting pair of characters, I would have liked to get to know a little more about them. It’s down to these two to try and solve a spate of murders. Bodies are turning up and someone is really torturing them, but who, and why. Is there even a connection with them? And can Miller and Grey make Exeter safe again? I have two more books by this author patiently sat on my kindle waiting for me to read them. I don’t think it will be to long before I get around to reading them.

A face that jolts her from the pain of her existence into a spiralling obsession with another girl – the first girl who disappeared… This is a gripping psychological thriller with a killer twist that will take your breath away.
This was one of those books that once started you really want to know what is coming next, and second guessing what is happening can't be helped. As usual I got it wrong. A very interesting read, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Once or twice i did find myself back tracking and forgetting who was who, but I think that's just my dumb head at the moment.
When 8 year old Grace goes missing her mother Emma has her life thrown into turmoil. Every parents worst nightmare and she has to live it. We go through the agony of a family in limbo of not knowing what has happened to their precious little girl. We also meet Maggie Taylor, who show's a keen interest in the disappearance of Grace as many many years ago she went through something similar with her granddaughter going missing. Could Maggie find similarities between the two cases or is it just her age and mind playing tricks on her. I have to say for me through this book I loved Maggie and the relationship she had with her old pal Jim. It was a lovely part to a very disturbing story. Very well written and worth reading. Gripping, thought provoking and thouroghly enjoyable. The SUNDAY TIMES bestseller returns with the second book in the PC Lucy Clayburn series - a must for all fans of Happy Valley and M.J. Arlidge. As a female cop walking the mean streets of Manchester, life can be tough for PC Lucy Clayburn. But when one of the North West’s toughest gangsters is your father, things can be particularly difficult. When Lucy's patch is gripped by a spate of murder-robberies, the police are quick to action. Yet when it transpires that the targets are Manchester’s criminal underworld, attitudes change. Lucy is soon faced with one of the toughest cases of her life – and one which will prove once and for all whether blood really is thicker than water… PC Lucy Clayburn series Book 2It seems forever ago since I read the first book to feature Lucy Clayburn - Strangers
You can read my review of that here. It's actually just a year since I read book 1, and here I am privileged to be reading an ARC of book 2. Strangers is a great read, something to get your teeth stuck into. I'm a huge fan of books that are based in and around Manchester. Lucy has her work cut out this time around, this case is going to really test her. When 'The Creeper turns up in Manchester the streets become a little scary. Alongside that there seems to be a number of 'odd robberies. Luckily Lucy has friends she can rely on in the Robbery squad. Lucy is one tough cookie, and a character I'm really growing to like and I can't wait to read more about her. I can see this series going on to be a long standing one. (I hope). I was a little unsure when I started to read this book, but it soon become clear that I was hooked, page after page begins to drag you into the story and doesn't let you go. With twists I didn't see coming and violence a plenty this isn't for the faint hearted. What it is, is a damn good thriller. And if that's the sort of book you like to read, then you need to start this now. At times, I felt the book was a little over the top, but I think now I have finished it, it all helped with the story. I have read book 1 as I said, and I always like to read books in order, but to be honest I don't think it would make much of a difference if you hadn't read book 1. It's a personal choice. I would like to thank Netgalley and Avon Books UK for an advance copy of Shadows. |
