The explosive sequel to #1 Sunday Times bestseller Bad Blood.
Set 18 years later, Hidden Sin is the story of Joey, his girlfriend Paula and Rasta Mo, the man he is to discover is his dad. Joey Parker is a young man with big dreams. Almost eighteen, he’s desperate to escape the shackles of his window cleaning round, so when’s offered the chance to try out as a drummer in a local Blondie tribute band he jumps at the chance. But it isn’t just the music that moves him. It’s also the fact that Paula Foster is the lead singer. The daughter of his mum’s old mate, Josie, she was once a childhood friend. They’ve not seen each other in years, and their mutual attraction is immediate. Meanwhile, notorious local drug overlord, Rasta Mo, has recently returned to Bradford after a spell inside and years in Marbella. He is instantly enamored with the good-looking drummer he discovers is his son. He decides that his new club is in need of a house band – and so begins his attempts to woo him. This book charts a journey between two men into a future neither visualized. And, in Joey’s case, into a dangerous criminal world he’s never known. And, while his mother and step-father can only look on in horror as Joey potentially becomes the one thing she’s always dreaded – his father’s son. Joey is oblivious to who Mo is. The truth has always been hidden from him. All he cares about is that his and Paula’s dreams are all starting to come true. But will the cost of achieving them be too high to pay?
Hidden Sin is a great read, an easy read book, that will see you flying through those pages.
I have read a few of these books in the series, unfortunately I seem to have missed a few out, but if i'm honest, I don't think it's taken anything away from the reading enjoyment. I have enjoyed all the books i've read by this author so far, and Hidden Sin is no exception. In this book we start off in Bradford 1997. Young Joey is growing up and learning to stand on his own two feet. His mother and step father have always been there for Joey. When Joey starts playing with a band, he soon has a blossoming love relationship, and he and Paula seem to be going places. Joeys mother really isn't happy when she realises that Rasta Mo has returned from living abroad, and doing time. When Mo starts showing a keen interest in her son, she dreads having to tell Joey that MO is actually his father. This knocks Joey, he doesn't know how he feels, or what if anything he want's from becoming friends with his father. What is most worrying is the fact that it seems Joey is going to end up in a whole heap of trouble. His father is a criminal and he's going to drag Joey into his world if he isn't careful. A really enjoyable read. I wanted to read on and on as I needed to know the direction the story would take. It's well worth reading. I just felt towards the end I needed more.

Family is not always a place of safety.
Kathleen was just eight years old when her mother was tragically killed in a car accident. And when her father remarries it is to the bitter and resentful Irene who has two children of her own and no space in her heart for another. Irene goes out of her way to make Kathleen's life as miserable as possible and will stop at nothing to get her out of their lives… When Kathleen is sixteen, a shocking incident rocks the family, and life takes a darker turn. Among this darkness, Kathleen finds a glimmer of hope in an older man, but Irene is ruthless in her mission to destroy her. Can Kathleen find happiness or is she destined for tragedy?
Having just realised this was book 4, I went to double check that I was up to date with the series. Somehow i've managed to miss out book 3, but I can't see it being an issue, I feel these seem ok to be read out of order. That said, I need to read the last book to satisfy my mind. I hate reading out of order.
It also seems that these books have all had a revamp. New covers and new titles. I have to admit I love the covers now, they have a great look to them. In this book we have a mixture of love and hate, a story of growing up and starting out a new life, learning of how to grow and understand. Kathleen has lived with her father and evil stepmother in their home, a pub which the family run. Now at 17 Kathleen is learning just how evil her stepmother is and learning to adjust. Finding love takes Kathleen on a whole new journey, and watching her grow into the woman she has become was interesting. This was an easy to follow read, enjoyable. I look forward to reading more by this author. The new covers and titles do the books more justice than the old. I just feel this book could have had so much more 'grit' thrown into it, to make it an exceptional read. It's disappointing to see a lot of 1 star reviews for this book, it seems most of them are because the books were individually written in 3 parts to start with, so you could buy them in parts or as a full book. People not realising this then leave 1 star reviews which doesn't really reflect on the book itself. Series Tales of the Notorious Hudson Family 1. Our Vinnie (2014) Now. In Cold Blood 2. My Uncle Charlie (2014) Now, Blood Line 3. My Mam Shirley (2014) Now, Closer Than Blood 4. Blood Ties (2016) 5. Bad Blood (2016) 6. Blood Sisters (2017) 7. Hidden Sin (2018) I hope I have these right. lol
If you lived on the notorious Canterbury Estate in the ‘40s and ‘50s, then you knew there was one man you did not want to cross: Charlie Hudson. A solitary man, feared and respected by the gangsters of the time, Charlie was a boxer who never lost a fight, in or out of the ring – the most infamous of The Canterbury Warriors. My Uncle Charlie, the second title in the explosive series unravels a story of debauchery, crime and self-destruction. Charlie Hudson was a born leader. The eldest of eight brothers and four sisters and with a boxer for a father, fighting was in his blood. And as the young protégé of local Italian gangster, Mr Cappovanni, Charlie not only learned to knock every opponent out, he also learned the tools of the crime and extortion trade well; emerging into adulthood in the middle of the war years as a natural heir: running cons, illegal books and a band of prostitutes. But when Charlie met Betty, a sweet, caring girl, he was determined to be a better man for her. He’d still deal with ‘business’ but no more would he bed his working girls, and the birth of their baby girl, Elizabeth, sealed it: he knew life could not get any better. But for a man who had only ever lived in the belly of the Canterbury Estate underworld, it could definitely get worse… Gritty and engrossing, book two of the Hudson family saga delves deeper into history of the infamous Canterbury Warriors; the true story of one man’s ascendancy to power, and the tragedy that brought it all crashing down. Having read the first book in this series, and then buying 2 more that then got lost away on my kindle, I decided it was time I caught up with the series as book 5 has now been published. This is the 2nd book in the Tales of the Notorious Hudson Family. We follow the story of Charlie. I loveable rouge. It was great following his life story, his ups and downs and amazing how his story changed so much. One mistake, one bad night and your whole life can change. It was a very interesting book, and at some points quite emotional, with some great characters, and it was great going back in time. It's very well written and put together and an easy read at just 240 pages. I really am looking forward to reading the rest of this series to see what Julie brings us.
The infamous Canterbury Estate in Bradford, a hotbed of crime, drink and drugs, was a law unto itself in the ’70s. So when one of their own was wronged in any way, the community always had its own way of dealing with it.
The first title in a series of gritty family sagas, Our Vinnie accounts the dramatic true story of a brother’s determination to avenge his younger sister’s rape. Josie was just 11 when her Vinnie, then 14, was taken away to a detention centre. Distraught by his absence and left alone with indifferent parents, when she escapes from one of their rows she naively enters the house of a neighbour, Melvin, who – horrifically – leads her upstairs and overpowers her. Convinced by her friend Carol, Josie tells her sister Lyndsey about the rape but, with Vinnie out of the picture, Lyndsey uses the information for her own ends. When Vinnie returns, hardened by years inside the system, his outrage on discovering the truth is severe. And with new abuses continually coming to light, a cataclysmic series of violent events begins to spiral out of control… Dramatic and shocking, Our Vinnie is an unbelievable page-turner, documenting a community forsaken by society, and one brother’s unrelenting determination to take justice into his own hands. 4/5 When I first hear about this book, I really really wanted to read it, So I went and purchased it from Amazon. But me being me, I also purchased the other two that were out then too. So I have had. 1 Our Vinnie 2 My Uncle Charlie 3 My Mam Shirley All sat on my kindle for what seems like an age. Just looking on amazon then, it seems I purchased this book in December 2014, I just can't believe it has taken me this long to get around to reading it. But I have to say i'm glad I finally did get around to it, as I really did enjoy it. It seemed like an easy read, With some fantastic characters. Some you dispise and others you really fall for. One of the characters I really felt for was Titch, Vinnie's sister, I was really rooting for her throughout this book to do well in life and make something of herself. Vinnie was just a character and a half, It was great following his up's and downs. more downs it seems, as he just doesn't seem to be able to keep himself out of trouble. Based on a Bradford council estate, this book has all you would expect. It really is a great read, A book you want to carry on with just to see what will happen next. Since I purchased this book Julie Shaw has since brought out another one. 4 Blood Ties and book 5 Bad Blood is due out 14th July 2016 So If you have not yet read any of this authors books, there are certainly enough to get your teeth into. |
