3.5*
When I first started this book, I knew I had read it before, yet once I got into it, I then thought maybe I hadn't. So I think at some stage I had previously started it, then not carried on, Why I don't know. But trying to get through some of the books I've had for far to long on my kindle, I carried on reading determined to get through that list. Yeah Right. Thanks to Netgalley and the Publishers for an Arc of this eBook. This is an interesting read, Silent is the Forest is the first in a series of novels about Detective Judith Krieger. When a badly decomposed body is discovered in a forest, Judith Krieger, a police detective from Cologne, is assigned to the case. Struggling with things from her past, this is Judith's last chance to redeem herself. But can Judith move on, can she show that she is still the detective everyone looked up to. As I said this was an interesting read, I just felt in parts it was a little slow, but still enjoyable. I would read more from this author.

'How long have you been sitting out here?' 'I got here yesterday.' 'Where did you come from?' 'I have no idea.' Lily has only been married for three weeks. When her new husband fails to come home from work one night, she is left stranded in a new country where she knows no one. Alice finds a man on the beach outside her house. He has no name, no jacket, no idea what he is doing there. Against her better judgement, she invites him into her home. But who is he, and how can she trust a man who has lost his memory? Two women, twenty years of secrets and a man who can't remember lie at the heart of Lisa Jewell's brilliant new novel. Finding this one a toughie for getting my thoughts together on it. I enjoyed it, it was different. I had no idea what so ever how it was going to turn out.
Very well put together, with some really likeable characters, I really liked Alice, she seemed a real carefree spirit. But with a heart of gold. East Yorkshire. Single Mum, Alice notices a man sat on the beach outside her home, he's been sat there a long time. she eventually takes him out a jacket to keep him warm and her softer side invites him to stay at her home. He's not staying in her house but in a summer house type building she has in her garden, that she occasionally rents out to earn a little extra money. The man, who her daughter names Frank, has lost his memory, doesn't know who or where he is. This part of the story fascinated me, you just can't imagine not knowing who you are or where you are from, or that you need to slice a bagel in half to toast it. But I can't imagine letting a strange man who doesn't even have a name into my home, into my families lives. Surrey Lily Monrose a 21 year old, left stranded in a new country where she doesn't know anyone. Newly wed, 3 weeks previously and it's turning out now that she also doesn't know her husband. When he failed to come home from work one night she goes to the police, and tell her that her husband never existed. So who was she married to, and most of all, where the hell is he? I found myself happily plodding along with the story, and the further in it got, the more I wanted to know about these characters, who is the stranger and what has happened to Lily's husband. I kept trying to link things together myself, but I didn't do a very good job of it. It's an interesting, yet different read. Lisa Jewell is a new author for me, but I think it's safe to say I wouldn't hesitate to read more from her.

Harpur Murray is devastated when her heroin addict brother Brady commits suicide. But why can't her mother talk about the night her son died? Meanwhile, an internet romance with an old flame makes her question if she ever really loved her husband, Neil. Was he just a safe rebound following a violent relationship?
In Karen Woods' labyrinthine Mancunian thriller, Harpur's family seem to hold the secrets to her son's death but will she ever learn the truth?
Another interesting easy read from Karen Woods. I have bought but not yet read all of Karen's books. Some I've loved more than others, and by far Broken Youth and Black Tears are still my all time favourites.
In this book we see Harpur Murray trying to come to terms with the loss of her borther, she becomes so obsessed with how or why he died that her own life seems to be taking on mind of its own, dragged along with grief can she find the answers she desperately wants. It's not only destroying her but her marriage to, and spurred on by her best friend things soon become a little to much and she's getting in deeper and deeper with an old flame she has met via social media. Another interesting read, but it didn't grab me as much as some of Karen's other books have. I'm sure fans of Karen's work will enjoy this, but for me it felt like some of the Grit was missing from it. All in all an enjoyable read, but it still can't top some of Karen's better work. A taut psychological thriller, perfect for fans of The Girl on the Train and I Let You Go. Karen is horrified when her 17 year old daughter, Sophie, is brought home by the police clearly drunk or worse still has she been taking drugs. The relief her daughter is safe quickly turns to horror as she finds our her daughters friend is missing. Sophie's big problem at this stage is she does not remember a thing from the night before. Absolutely nothing. How can that be? Was she really that wasted? When the body of a young woman is discovered Karen and Sophie fear the worst for her friend. Karen struggles leaving the home after going through a traumatic event a few years ago, the thought of leaving the house fills Karen each time with dread and panic attacks set in. But as things take a turn and Karen seems to become more and more involved in what is going on it soon seems that Karen has got to leave the house to not only help her daughter but to keep her safe. An interesting read, and goes to show just how far you will go to protect your child. Enjoyable, but I have to admit that Karen really got on my nerves, and from time to time I could have quite happily slapped her. That saying, it's worth reading and I look forward to reading more from this author. A huge thank you to the author/publishers and Netgalley for an ARC of this book.

But at what cost?
My thoughts. 3.5/5
I was looking forward to reading this book, firstly because Bill Rogers is a new author for me and secondly because it's based around Manchester. I always seem to enjoy a book when I can actually visualise the places that are mentioned, I find I like books that have familiar locations in them. And enjoy reading how the author describes those places. I also have to mention that I loved the dedication in the front of this book, it made me chuckle when I read it. Not often they start with This book is not dedicated to.... I'd also like to say thank you to the publishers, Netgalley and the Author for the ARC I received of this book. This is what I gather the first book in what could be a very promising series. I did enjoy this book, but in parts I felt like something was missing, I don't know what for certain but that's just how I felt, It was like the book kept grabbing me but then letting go again, It didn't keep my attention as much as I was hoping it would. That aside it is an easy read, and enjoyable. Just not the Gripping book I thought it was going to be. A mans body is discovered buried in woodlands outside Manchester. He had been missing for 10 years before his body was discovered. And it seems like he was gagged, bound and buried alive. But why? And what else is buried with him. It's down to newly promoted Senior Investigator Joanne Stuart to try and figure this out. Now working for The Behavioural Science Unit, this is Joanne's first case with them. And she does go out of her way to try and prove herself. We are introduced to her private life as well as her work life, and I can see her becoming a very interesting character. I will be looking out for the next book by this author as I'd like to see how it differs now we have got to know the department and it's characters a little better. Product details
'Another year and I still don't like old people. Me? I am 83 years old.' Hendrik Groen may be old, but he is far from dead and isn't planning to be buried any time soon. Granted, his daily strolls are getting shorter because his legs are no longer willing and he had to visit his doctor more than he'd like. Technically speaking he is ... elderly. But surely there is more to life at his age than weak tea and potted geraniums? Hendrik sets out to write an exposé: a year in the life of his care home in Amsterdam, revealing all its ups and downs - not least his new endeavour the anarchic Old-But-Not Dead Club. And when Eefje moves in - the woman Hendrik has always longed for - he polishes his shoes (and his teeth), grooms what's left of his hair and attempts to make something of the life he has left, with hilarious, tender and devastating consequences. The indomitable Hendrik Groen - Holland's unlikeliest hero - has become a cultural phenomenon in his native Netherlands and now he and his famously anonymous creator are conquering the globe. A major Dutch bestseller, The Secret Diary of Hendrik Groen will not only delight older readers with its wit This is one of those books when you want something a little different, then this is it. It is a good fun read, some great lol moments.
Anyone who read and enjoyed The Secret life Of Frank Derrick would enjoy this. Hendrik lives in a Care home, but he certainly doesn't sit looking out the window all day or watching TV. No he seems to like trouble and mischief. And he has started to record everything daily in his diary. As well as the fun side, it also shows how important friendship can be. and having a support group of people you can get along with, and share life. This book also covers some of the health issues that fold in the home suffer with. It is an interesting and different read. Detective Chief Inspector Harriet Martens has earned the nickname the Hard Detective — but she’s had to be unyielding to make it in a man’s world. It was, after all, this toughness that inspired her successful Stop the Rot campaign, which has so provoked local criminals. But now two of her officers have died within hours of each other. Harriet comes to believe both have been murdered — and a disturbing idea follows. For the circumstances of each death echo words from the Book of Exodus: A Life for a Life, an Eye for an Eye … Has a killer chosen this gruesome ritual to tell Harriet she has been pushing too hard? And if so, can she prevent the six deaths that will surely complete the quotation? Beginning with a tooth for tooth… Harriet Martens may find that she is not the Hard Detective for much longer… 3.5/5
An interesting read, from an author that is new to me. This is the first book I have ready by this author, but I know it wont be the last as I have another two sitting on my kindle waiting for me to read. This book Features Chief Inspector Harriet Martens, she is nick named The Hard Detective, and to start with she does seem very abrupt, and almost cold, a Hard faced Bitch. But maybe this is just a way of coping and dealing with the shit that is thrown at you as copper. I felt like I got through this book pretty quick as it's only 263 pages, it is a very easy and enjoyable read, with a great story line to it. I felt like I was getting to know the characters as well as being thrown right in to the case and learning the story. I did at some points think that things were repeated a little too much. And the reviews on this book seem to be up or down, i'm more middle of the road. For some unknown reason, police officers are being killed. and after 2 officers are killed Harriet soon begins to realise that they have indeed been murdered, it then becomes apparent that each killing has some sort of connection to the Book of Exodus, A life for a life, an Eye for an Eye.... But why, what is the motive behind it. This has got to be some sick twisted killer. But how on earth is he choosing his victims. Can Harriet and her team figure this out and piece everything together before any more killings occur. I would like to thank Netgalley and The Publishers for a review copy of this book. It's much appreciated. The Girl With All The Gifts by M. R. Carey Little, Brown Book Group UK NOT EVERY GIFT IS A BLESSING Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant Parks keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don't like her. She jokes that she won't bite. But they don't laugh. Melanie is a very special girl. Emotionally charged and gripping from beginning to end, THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS is the most powerful and affecting thriller you will read this year. Thank you to the publishers and Netgalley for my review copy of this book. This is one of those books that leave you thinking about it, even when you put it down. A difficult one to write about for fear of giving to much away, and not wishing to spoil it for other readers. This story is based around a young ten year old girl Melanie. Who spends most of her time locked up in cell, then is taken out of her cell to go and learn, Melanie really enjoys learning. I found the book quite interesting to start off with, and kept wondering where it was all going. It is an interesting read, but just not for me if i'm honest. It's well thought out and well put together and looking at other reviews some have loved it. so maybe this is one of those books that you will either love or you wont. When Tsara Adelman leaves her husband and two young children for a weekend to visit her estranged uncle, she little dreams he is holding several local children captive on his lavish estate. Mike Westbrook, father of one of the boys, kidnaps her to trade her life for the children's. Soon Tsara and Mike are fleeing through New Hampshire's mountain wilderness pursued by two rogue cops with murder on their minds. 3.5/5 Wrong Place, Wrong Time by Tilia Klebenov Jacobs Linden Tree Press Thank you to the publishers and Netgalley for a review copy of this book. After reading the blurb on this book, I thought it sounded like something I would enjoy. It then became lost on my kindle amongst other books, and I have only just gotten around to reading it. It felt a little slow for me to start off with but it did pick up pace as the book went on. Tsara Has managed to convince herself that she should go to visit her Uncle, at his estate. Things have gone on in the past that has put let's say a strain on their relationship, so his invite to her seems like a way of making amends. Unfortunatly for Tsara she is then Kidnapped. And this seems to be where the book really picks up. The book is told from different points of view, which helps make it interesting. All in all not a bad read. On Friday, Nick Grant is an ordinary guy, with a good job, a wife he loves, and an adorable eight-year-old son. On Saturday, his wife is dead, his son is in critical condition, and there is an unidentified body in the basement. Wracked with torment and guilt, he retreats to a rental house he owns in "The Bottoms," a crime-ridden slum in Columbus, Ohio, where he falls into a life of drugs and alcohol. A chance encounter with a young woman who shares her deadly secret sucks Nick Grant into a vortex of criminal activity where he becomes an unwitting player in a dangerous game of chance in a battle between the underworld and law enforcement at the highest levels. What follows is an intricate tale of greed, corruption, deception, and murder. 3.5/5 Life is tough for Nick Grant. After losing his family in a house fire, a tragic accident or is it something else? Nick soon becomes a different person to the one he's always been, drugs and alcohol take over his life. Not the best way to cope with things but for Nick it seems the only way. And as life becomes pretty sh... for him, he finally starts to sort himself out. can he get of the booze and drugs and turn his life back around. Nick takes a job as a window washer, and his journey of becoming clean starts. Only things don't exactly run smoothly for him. He then becomes mixed up in a crime. And the only way to find out what happens is to read the book. I really can't give any more away as it really would spoil it for you. I found this book quite an interesting read, I got through it pretty quickly, as it's just over 200 pages, but it wasn't the fast paced gritty read I was expecting. I found it a little slow in parts and felt we really didn't get to know the main characters properly. But still an interesting read and worth giving a go. |
