Following in the wake of hugely successful medical memoirs such as Do No Harm and Fragile Lives, Critical is an intelligent, compelling and profoundly insightful journey into the world of intensive care medicine and the lives of people who have forever been changed by it.
Being critically ill means one or more of your vital organs have failed - this could be your lungs, your heart, your kidneys, your gut or even your brain. Starting with the first recognised case in which a little girl was saved by intensive care in 1952 in Copenhagen, Matt writes brilliantly about the fascinating history, practices and technology in this newest of all the major medical specialties. Matt guides us around the ICU by guiding us around the body and the different organs, and in this way, we learn not only the stories of many of the patients he’s treated over the years but also about the various functions different parts of the body. He draws on his time spent with real patients, on the brink of death, and explains how he and his colleagues fight against the odds to help them live. Happily many of his cases have happy endings, but Matt also writes movingly about those cases which will always remain with him - the cases where the mysteries of the body proved too hard to solve, or diagnoses came too late or made no difference to the outcome.
I purchase this book on a recent shopping trip as it looked really intriguing and interesting.
I had read part of the book, sitting down and enjoying it when I had chance to read. When I realised Netgalley had put it up as one of their new audio books I jumped at the chance to listen to it. I didn't need to wait for chance to sit and read. Out came my ear buds and a paint brush and while painting the fences and doing some gardening I listened to the book. It was a great listen, the narrator had a very calming relaxing voice, the book is done sympathetically towards some hard subjects. One of the reasons this book caught my eye was as it's based around Intensive care I thought it would be good to learn from the dr's side of things. I had a family member in ICU and the stress on the family at the time was immense. Yet the treatment he received was first class from drs and nurses alike. Each chapter gives info on a different subject and it was absolutely fascinating. These are the sort of medics you want on your care if ever it was needed. The knowledge and range that is spoken about is brilliant. I'm by no ways medically trained at all so this was good for me, maybe someone who is medically trained may not appreciate the explanations of some of the subjects. This is by far one of the best medical books I've read. maybe ideal for anyone who is thinking of working in this field or if you are just like me and nosey. I have just re read this book via audible. It was just as good if not better the 2nd time around. And listening to it was fantastic. Having my own little story teller with me whilst out and about. I'm new to listening to audio books and so far have only listened to books I have previously read. The story in this book, just draw's you in right from the start. I was wondering at one point, how it was all going to come together, but it did and its was brilliantly done. Casey Kelleher has written another superb exciting book that really is UNPUTDOWNABLE. It's a long time since all i could think about was picking up my kindle to read just a little bit more... This is by far one the best books i've read this year.. and if i could give 6 stars i would ...A brilliant book which I would highly recommend Free from prison... but still trapped in a nightmare... Having been locked up for a murder that she didn't commit, Sophia O'Hagan is now determined to take back what's hers. Sophia has been robbed of eight years of her life: a life that she should have spent with her beloved Tommy. Now, Tommy has gone and Sophia's family has been torn apart. She knows that she will never know true freedom until she confronts the painful ghosts of her past. Available now in Paperback. Kindle. or Audio. click here After reading this book a few years ago and loving it. I was thrilled when I got the chance to listen to it on Audio.
Not being sure what to expect, I took my phone and headphones, on a walk, then took it to work, then It ended up going everywhere with me, including the dentist it took my mind off that horrible man with his hands in my mouth. lol. It was funny as although I had read the book, with it being a few years ago, I had forgotten a lot of what happened, and found listening to this, interesting and exciting. Many kindle books have the text to speach enabled, and if you have ever listened to it, you will know it sounds very robotic and hard to follow. This is not the case witht he audio version, it was like having someone with a great soothing voice follow me around reading to me. Great for when you want to read, but haven't got the chance to sit down. I'm now listening to this for the 2nd time while i get stuck into my housework. The audio book is brilliant and I would love to listen to more books in future. |
